Report: Engineer-Doctor

future profile

for research and industry

A very interesting point of view

from the leading engineering school

Arts et Métiers.jpeg

"In France, the Grandes Écoles engineering schools enjoy a reputation unmatched in other countries, where engineers are trained in universities and the most sought-after qualification is a PhD. This creates a distorted image of French engineers with doctorates. Only 6% of engineers pursue a doctorate. Misconceptions abound regarding their employability and recognition, as the position of engineers from the Grandes Écoles has become the pinnacle of success."

The report, co-led by Rémi Bastien and Michael Pereira, dismantles prejudices and highlights what a doctorate brings to engineers.

He concludes with the conviction that the engineer-doctor is a profile of the future, both for research and industry, a profile that needs to be promoted . To this end, he offers recommendations addressed to engineering schools, the public research community, and businesses alike.

Increase the number of engineers pursuing doctoral research
  • The Lazarus/Pommier report was presented at the national doctoral day and the priorities identified by the Minister of Economy, Finance and Industry and of Higher Education and Research were communicated to the community on this occasion.

  • For the Minister of the Economy, the three priorities to be implemented are to propose the creation of a European Doctoral Day, to develop a network of ambassadors to give visibility to PhD holders and the richness of their contribution to society, and to consider the implementation of a "doctoral intensity index" in companies to give visibility and allow monitoring of the impact of the presence of PhD holders – in the long term this could be one of the indicators for the awarding of the CIR.

  • On the side of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, the three priorities are to create a national platform for doctoral studies, to develop the number of engineers engaging in doctoral research and to involve representatives of the sectors in which doctoral graduates work in the management of doctoral training.

  • The report is available on the website of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research .

"Les alumni d’écoles d’ingénieur

  • poursuivent plus rapidement en doctorat, en partie en raison d’une plus grande facilité et rapidité à obtenir le financement.

  • sont les premiers bénéficiaires des financements CIFRE. Ainsi 63 % des bénéficiaires de thèses CIFRE sont ingénieures et ingénieurs. "
